Erma Jean Hartline Choate, 92, passed away peacefully on October 9, 2026, in Maryville, Tennessee, secure in her faith in Jesus Christ.

Erma was born on August 18, 1934, in Murphysboro, Illinois, to Raymond "Cotton" Hartline and Wanda Penrod Hartline. She married Robert Choate in 1953 in Anna, Illinois. They moved to Tullahoma, Tennessee, where she devoted herself to family life and community service.

Erma's volunteer work in Tullahoma led to a successful career as a bank branch manager in Nashville and later as an association executive in the hospitality industry.

Erma later moved to Maryville, Tennessee, to be closer to her daughter. She had a decorator's touch, reflected in the joy she found in creating beautiful surroundings and sharing them with others. Even as glaucoma gradually robbed her of her sight, she continued changing her apartment with the seasons, arranging each space in her mind's eye.

Throughout her life, Erma's journey of faith led her to a deep and abiding trust in Jesus Christ and the truth of God's Word.

Erma once wrote, "I love my faith in God, and I hope you do, too."

Erma is survived by her daughter, Julie Choate Moore (Jim); stepgrandsons Jimmy and Mark Moore; stepgranddaughter Jenny Croker Moore; and four great-grandchildren: Perry, Noah, Elsa, and Devon Moore. Beyond her family, Erma leaves behind many cherished friends, including those she came to know and love among the residents and staff of Shannondale of Maryville. Their friendship, compassion, and love meant so much to Erma and her family.

In memory of Erma, and in lieu of flowers, please consider a tribute gift to Samaritan's Purse or to the Glaucoma Research Foundation.

She will be laid to rest in Anna, Illinois, at a later date. Cremation by Grandview in Maryville is caring for the family.
