Tommie "Jean" Mullis

Maryville, Tennessee

Tommie Jean Mullis, 91, of Maryville, TN died Tuesday April 9th, 2024 in Blount Memorial Hospital.  Jean, as she was known for most of her life, was born in Laurel, Mississippi on November 23rd, 1932.  She was the oldest daughter of five children of the late James Coley and Myra Anderson.  Jean lived most of her life in Alabama and California.  In her later years she moved to Maryville, Tennessee.  

Jean was an avid NASCAR fan.  Her favorite drivers were Dale Earnhardt, Jr. and Sr.  Jean was also the first female driver on the track in Mobile, Alabama during a NASCAR event in the 1960’s.  Jean would often say “Do not call me on Sundays when the race is on” and she meant it.

Jean graduated from the Providence School of Nursing in Mobile, Alabama in 1972.  Later, in California she worked for Olen Oil Company for 40 years in various office positions.

Jean also was a life-long supporter of the Alabama Crimson Tide NCAA football team, including the period when Paul “Bear” Bryant was their Hall of Fame coach.  Jean also loved to travel and her favorite destination was Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

Jean is survived by two children – Phillip Michael Mullis of Maryville, TN and Angela Denise Raber of Leland, NC.  There are five grandchildren – Phillip Michael Mullis, Jr., Christopher Mullis, Tory Anderson, Sam Stewart, and Max Stewart and two great-grandchildren – Brooklyn and Ace Stewart.
