David Guy Carter, 73 of Maryville, passed away suddenly October 6, 2025. David was born in Florida on March 30, 1952. His family moved to Morristown, Tennessee when David was about 10 years old but within a couple of years, he and his siblings became wards of the state. From age 12 through high school graduation David lived in Nashville at the Tennessee Home for Children. While there David excelled academically, graduating near the top of his class. Because of his hard work and character, he was selected to be a Page at the Tennessee State Capitol in his senior year. After graduation, he attended East Tennessee State University, graduating with a degree in Criminal Justice and a minor in Psychology.
Following graduation, he moved back to Morristown where he met Sally Kelley at the library where she worked while he searched newspapers for employment opportunities. David and Sally were married 35 years until her death in 2012. David worked as a parole officer for the Tennessee Department of Corrections, becoming the director of the Maryville office. He was highly respected by his fellow workers and others in the corrections department. He and Sally loved to travel with their family. They had many years of great adventures and visited almost every state. David was also an avid hiker. He and friends hiked the Appalachian trail, lacking only a few miles to complete the entire length of the trail.
David was a true Christian man. He was a kind, gentle and generous person who love his Lord and loved sharing his Christian faith and how God had blessed his life. He has been a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church for 40 years, serving as a deacon, Sunday School Teacher and choir member with the most beautiful tenor voice.
In 2017, he met Linda Robinson, also a widow. They were married in 2021. Because he and Sally were not blessed with children, he now became the stepfather of two adult children, Leslie and Brad, and a step-grandfather to Hannah, Sarah, Mollie, Cade and Casen. What a new adventure for David. In addition to his new family, he is survived by Sally's family in Greenville, Tennessee and special niece Christa Miller.
A celebration of life will be held at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, Sunday, October 12, 2025. Receiving of friends at 1:30 with the service at 3:00, Rev. Justin Randolph and Rev. Greg Long officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to Pleasant Grove Baptist Church or your favorite charity.
