Mr. Sherwood "Woody" Harris

September 8, 1933 — October 18, 2020

On October 18, 2020, after a year long hard fought battle, Sherwood (Woody) Harris quietly and peacefully slipped away from this earthbound life. He had come into this world September 8, 1933, in Portsmouth, Virginia, with a love for animals (especially dogs) that would last a lifetime. Woody was preceded on this journey by his parents, Wilbur and Katherine Harris, brothers Marvin and Alvin Harris and their wives, Evelyn and Shirley, and one nephew Randy Baer. He leaves behind his wife of 32 years, Diane, stepson Jon Burkett (Ardis), one sister Judy Baer (John), one niece, several nephews, numerous cousins, friends and six Schipperkes (Possum, Bailey, Pippin, Marcus, Genny, and Karat), three cats, and various wild critters who have dinner on the porch each night. A true patriot, Woody served his country in the Army during the Korean War. He retired in 1998 as Director Of Maintenance and Facilities Engineering from Gulfstream Aerospace in Savannah, Georgia. The family, including horses and dogs, relocated to acreage in beautiful Eastern Tennessee, where he enjoyed life as a gentleman farmer. He was involved in showing dogs for 60 years, was an AKC Breeder of Merit of Champion Schipperkes, as well as an AKC Judge and Mentor. Woody was a founding member of the Colonial Schipperke Club and long time member and supporter of the Schipperke Club of America. He had in recent years become active in the newly formed United States Schipperke Club, where all Schipperkes, regardless of color or tails, are welcomed. He will be missed by many, especially his wife and close friends. Due to Covid rules and dangers, no service is planned at this time, In lieu of flowers, Woody would have preferred donations be made to help Schipperkes in need, to either Schipperke Rescue Net, or to Midwest Schipperke Rescue.
